USS Liberty Survivor Phil Tourney Uncovers Shocking Truth About 1967 Attack

Phil Tourney, survivor of the 1967 USS Liberty attack, exposes the cover-up and political betrayal in a gripping interview. Learn what really happened and why it still matters today.

A Forgotten Chapter of U.S. Naval History

In an explosive episode of Deep Shallow Dive, host Ray Doustdar interviews Phil Tourney—one of the most outspoken survivors of the USS Liberty attack. Tourney details the horrific events of June 8, 1967, when Israeli forces attacked a clearly marked American intelligence ship during the Six-Day War.

The Day the Flag Didn’t Matter

Tourney recalls how Israeli reconnaissance aircraft flew over the USS Liberty multiple times prior to the attack, positively identifying the ship as American. Yet at 2:00 PM, unmarked Israeli jets launched a brutal assault using rockets, napalm, and machine gun fire—followed by torpedo boats that fired five torpedoes, one of which hit directly in the communications center, killing 25.

“They shot down our flags. They circled and kept firing. They shot our life rafts out of the water,” says Tourney. “This wasn’t war—it was murder.”

Betrayal at the Highest Level

What’s more shocking than the attack itself? The alleged U.S. government response—or lack thereof. Tourney claims:

  • Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara recalled rescue jets before they reached the ship.

  • President Lyndon B. Johnson allegedly said, “I will not embarrass my ally Israel.”

  • Survivors were threatened into silence by Admiral Isaac Kidd and told never to speak of the incident.

The Real Mission—And a False Flag?

The USS Liberty was officially labeled a “research” ship. Tourney says it was in fact a spy vessel with a mixed crew of naval personnel and intelligence operatives. The alleged motive behind the attack? A failed false flag operation meant to drag the U.S. into war against Egypt. According to Tourney, if the ship had sunk, Israel would have blamed Egypt—potentially sparking a nuclear response.

Silenced for Decades, Still Fighting for Truth

Despite over 200 Purple Hearts and the ship being one of the most decorated in U.S. naval history for a single incident, no full congressional investigation has ever occurred. Survivors were ignored by the media, denied VA benefits, and smeared as conspiracy theorists.

“They don’t want people to know we were betrayed,” Tourney says. “But I’m not going to shut up—not until my last breath.”
