Meet Phil Tourney
The Man Who Chose to Stay Afloat
In 1967, Phil Tourney’s life changed forever.
Serving aboard the USS Liberty in international waters, Phil faced one of the most shocking attacks in U.S. naval history. Thirty-four of his shipmates were killed, 171 were wounded, and the ship itself was left burning and broken. Against impossible odds, Phil survived.
That day could have defined him by tragedy.
Instead, it became the foundation of his purpose.
A Legacy of Service and Strength
Phil is a decorated U.S. Navy Veteran, a recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. But his medals tell only part of the story. What defines him most isn’t the attack he endured — it’s how he chose to live afterward.
Through decades of reflection, advocacy, and storytelling, Phil has turned pain into purpose. His life now stands as a living tribute to resilience, courage, and truth — not just for those who served beside him, but for anyone navigating their own storms.
The Message: Stay Afloat
From the chaos of that day came a simple truth that guides Phil’s mission: Stay Afloat.
It’s a mindset forged in fire — a reminder that no matter what life throws at you, you can endure, rise, and rebuild.
Phil now shares that message to “Stay Afloat” through his The Phil Tourney Podcast and as a motivational speaker, holding candid conversations with people who’ve faced adversity and found strength on the other side.
Honoring the Past. Inspiring the Future.
Phil’s voice carries two missions:
To honor the memory of those who gave their lives aboard the USS Liberty.
To inspire others to live with courage, faith, and perseverance.
Whether he’s speaking to veterans, students, or corporate teams, Phil’s story reminds audiences that storms don’t define us — how we respond does.

Phillip F. Tourney is a decorated U.S. Navy Veteran, survivor of the 1967 USS Liberty attack, and recipient of the Bronze Star V and Purple Heart. Prior to Liberty, he did two tours on the USS Mauna Kea in waters off Vietnam. For his actions during the Liberty attack, he received a Bronze Star with “V” device plus a Purple Heart. He’s been President (or multiple-term President) of the USS Liberty Veterans Association.
That day changed him forever—but it didn’t define his end. It became his beginning.
Today, Phil shares his story to remind others: No matter how rough the seas, you can stay afloat—if you hold to courage, faith, and truth.
“They tried to sink us. We stayed afloat. And that’s what life demands…
STAY AFLOAT.”
