Phil Tourney on The Berm Pit: Inside the USS Liberty Attack & Government Betrayal

A Navy Veteran Speaks Truth to Power
In a gripping appearance on The Berm Pit, USS Liberty survivor Phil Tourney exposes the brutal truth about the 1967 attack on the American naval intelligence ship and the decades-long cover-up that followed. Tourney’s firsthand account challenges the sanitized version of history and demands justice for the lives lost and forever changed.

What Really Happened on June 8, 1967
While operating in international waters during the Six-Day War, the USS Liberty was attacked without warning by Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats. Despite clear American markings—including a large flag flying high—Israeli forces launched a sustained two-hour assault.

“They were trying to kill every single one of us,” says Tourney. “It wasn’t war—it was premeditated murder.”

Attack Highlights Shared by Tourney:

  • Repeated Israeli reconnaissance flights identified the ship as American.

  • Jets destroyed all communication antennas within seconds.

  • A torpedo hit midship, killing 25 intelligence officers instantly.

  • Survivors trying to help the wounded were fired upon.

  • Life rafts were machine-gunned after being deployed.

The Cover-Up Begins Immediately
According to Tourney, rescue aircraft were launched from nearby U.S. carriers but were ordered to turn back—twice—by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and President Lyndon Johnson. Survivors were debriefed under threat of prison if they spoke about the event.

A False Flag That Failed
Tourney asserts the Liberty attack was intended to be blamed on Egypt, giving the U.S. a pretext to enter the war. The only reason the plan failed? The ship didn’t sink.

Tourney’s Lifelong Mission
For decades, Phil Tourney has been a voice for those who can no longer speak. He believes the USS Liberty remains the most decorated U.S. Navy ship for a single engagement—but also the most censored. Through his advocacy, Tourney continues to push for a full public investigation and national awareness.

“The truth is not anti-anything,” he says. “The truth is American. And Americans deserve it.”
