Breaking Points Interview with James Li: Phil Tourney Reveals the USS Liberty Cover-Up That Still Haunts America

A Story the Mainstream Media Still Refuses to Touch

In a powerful Breaking Points interview, James Li speaks with Phil Tourney, survivor of the 1967 USS Liberty attack — one of the most shocking and suppressed incidents in U.S. military history.
For 57 years, the official narrative has described the attack as a “tragic mistake.” But according to Tourney — and dozens of surviving crew members — the truth is far more disturbing.

“It was cold-blooded, premeditated murder. And it was covered up from day one.”

What Happened on June 8, 1967

The USS Liberty, America’s most advanced NSA intelligence ship, was operating legally in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula during the Six-Day War.
Without warning, the ship was attacked by a supposed ally — Israel.

According to Phil:

  • Israeli recon planes circled the ship for hours, waving at the crew.

  • At 2:00 PM, Israeli jets—with their markings painted over—launched a full assault.

  • All communications antennas were destroyed within seconds.

  • Napalm, rockets, and machine-gun fire tore through the decks.

  • Torpedo boats fired five torpedoes — one killed 25 Americans instantly.

  • Helicopters carrying Israeli commandos approached to board and finish the job.

“We thought they were there to help us. They weren’t. They were there to sink us.”

“Mistaken Identity”? The Survivors Say Absolutely Not

Despite official claims, survivors argue the attack could not have been accidental:

  • The Liberty was uniquely shaped, unmistakable, and flying a large U.S. flag.

  • Israel surveilled the ship for hours prior to the attack.

  • Intercepted communications — now public — show Israeli pilots identifying the ship as American.

  • The Liberty was the only ship in the region ordered toward the war zone.

  • Israeli forces intentionally destroyed all lifeboats — a war crime.

“Israel knew exactly who we were. They wanted us on the bottom of the ocean.”

The Cover-Up: “Don’t You Ever Breathe a Word”

Tourney describes how the Navy’s official investigation — completed in only seven days — ignored survivor testimony and relied almost entirely on Israel’s account.

After the attack:

  • Survivors were threatened by Admiral Isaac Kidd:
“If you talk, you’ll face prison — or worse.”

  • President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered U.S. rescue aircraft to turn back, twice.

  • Medals awarded to the crew removed all references to Israel.

  • Congress has refused, to this day, to hold a public investigation.

“They took the attackers’ word over the American crew who lived through hell.”

Why Attack the Liberty? The Motive Phil Believes Is Clear

According to Tourney, evidence points to a planned false-flag operation:

  • Sink the Liberty.

  • Blame Egypt.

  • Trigger U.S. entry into the war.

  • Justify an overwhelming American response — potentially involving nuclear weapons.

Tourney states nuclear aircraft were already en route to Cairo before the attack even began.

“We didn’t sink. That’s the only reason we didn’t have World War III.”

57 Years Later — What Do the Survivors Want?

Not money. Not revenge.
Just the truth.

Phil Tourney, now president of the USS Liberty Veterans Association, wants:

  • A full Congressional investigation

  • Public acknowledgement of what happened

  • Honor for the 34 Americans killed and 171 wounded

  • Truth for families who were lied to for decades

“Our country deserves the truth. Let us testify under oath. If they think we’re lying — put us in jail.”
